MetaVerse | Future of the Internet
MetaVerse | Future of the Internet
Background!
The story that can now be coined as the turn of the Internet development happened on October 29, 2021, when Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, announced that the parent company of Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram would change its name from ‘Facebook’ to ‘Meta’. Upon his announcement, although the names and technologies of its apps remained the same—Facebook remained Facebook, and Instagram Instagram—the Internet went frenzy.
This suggests the determination of the company, as Mark made it known in explaining its plans for the futuristic Meta project, which would enable users to connect with their family, co-workers, friends, and colleagues, on a deeper level.

He claimed, “Our overarching goal across all of these initiatives is to help bring the metaverse to life.” And that is why he introduced the metaverse, where users would have their digital avatars that can be present at any given time in the virtual space. This avatar can attend meetings, have a date and even hang out with friends far away in other countries.
Defining the Metaverse!
Before Mark Zuckerberg announced the name changing of Facebook at Connect 21, Metaverse was no more than a concept for a long time. “The metaverse is a massively scaled and interoperable network of real-time rendered 3D virtual words which can be experienced synchronously and persistently by an effectively unlimited number of users with an individual sense of presence and with continuity of data, such as identity, history, entitlements, objects, communications, and payments”, wrote the Venture capitalist Mathew Ball.
Combining all the points of view above, it is clear that to bring forth the realization of the metaverse, it’s inevitable to merge various elements of technology which will enable users to have a close to real-life experience in a digital space.
Further Comprehension!
Just recall the time when you played a video game with a virtual reality (VR) experience, that is, playing a game with your VR headset on, and everything feels so real like you are actually in the game. You find yourself chased by a monster in the digital world, as you running and screaming. At that moment, you have completely gotten lost in a video game. Once you remove the VR headset, you are back to life.
And think of GTA San Andreas. There are NPCs in the video game, who you could shoot at, kill for free and get away with it. Their actions and reactions are programmed, and are just there for fun of it. That is why you find it easy playing a particular video game at a certain level, as nothing has changed in the same level with same characters. The only difference is how you choose to play the game.
And the metaverse is no difference from that. It is simply virtual or augmented reality in a broader sense. The major exception is that there is no NPC out there in the metaverse; there are only people like yourself, who are as real as you. They wouldn’t be restricted to programmed actions and reactions like in video games. Everything happens in the metaverse are just the way it will happen in real life, only in a digital space.
When will the metaverse come true?
Mark Zuckerberg predicted that it might take 5-10 years until the metaverse go mainstream. Some elements of it are enjoyed by us now, as ultra-fast broadband speeds, virtual reality headsets, and persistent always-on online worlds are keys to which many people now have access. Tech giants are hence investing in huge volumes to develop their digital assets for the mainstream anticipation. Microsoft, Meta, Roblox, Epic Games, Minecraft, Sandbox, to mention but a few are racing towards this direction. It seems obvious that metaverse is a gateway to a new level of digital economy for both users and creators in the future.
